New solo album Waterbugs releases June 1st.
Since the summer of 2012, Ribbons of Song has been a quiet beast. Instead of playing shows, we’ve all been off doing our own things. I’ve tried to play out very little, letting songs write themselves when they come along, but not working too hard at it. As a band, we worked very hard during 2011 and 2012. Speaking for myself, trying to push our Kickstarter up the big hill of fundraising wore me out. Trying to organize and record Little Storm, a 19-song album featuring 16 musicians,...

Sam Cook-Parrott (former Ribbons drummer, tambourinist, bassist, and Ribbonette) and Jes Kramer (Ribbonette on every album I’ve made) invited me to be a part of a new and short-lived project called Weird Signals. After launching our Kickstarter project just a week ago, we’ve covered a lot of ground — raising over $1500 through the pledges of 53 backers from all around the country and the world. Add to that some passionate and devoted re-posting and link-sharing by lots of supportive friends, family, and fans all over Facebook, and I’m kinda staggered out on the edge of incredulity. Sam Snedeker just bought a ridiculously beautiful polished wooden canoe with a cloth sail. He may not be able to pay rent anymore and he may have to barter canoe rides for his meals, but WHO CARES? It’s summer-time. Kaitlin D. just got a “real-person” graphic design job on the other side of the state, and is taking a rather permanent leave of absence from the band to pursue adult things like paying rent and designing graphics. Knock ‘em dead, Kaitlin. We miss you a ton....

The last two weeks have been speckled with both tough times and golden moments. Our drummer, Tim Broderick, presented a jaw-dropping magic show at Ben Scott-Brandt’s daughter Eleanor’s birthday party last weekend. Sadly, Ben Scott-Brandt’s mother passed away on St. Patrick’s Day, after a long and difficult illness. Her musical legacy and creative spirit are an integral part of Ben’s songwriting. She will be missed. Recent band highlights included us little Ribbons...

Recording Diaries: February 18th Dustin Anderson, Kolin Smith, and Ben Scott-Brandt spent a few hours in the studio this morning finishing up percussion and fuzz guitar overdubs for Shards of Glass, Let Me Be Your Neil Young, and Your White Hand. The songs are shaping up really nicely. Now it’s Dustin’s time to shine — mixing together all those crazy instrument and vocal tracks! We’re looking forward to tracking 5 more songs later this year to put toward a new...
